About Animals Helping People
The Animals Helping People (AHP) Programme at Crosskennan Lane Animal Sanctuary is more than just a service—it’s a bridge of connection, understanding, and healing between people and animals. Our mission is to create meaningful, therapeutic, and educational experiences that promote well-being and personal growth for individuals from all walks of life. Here at Crosskennan Lane, we have cultivated an environment where people and animals support each other, fostering empathy, resilience, and a sense of belonging.
How It All Began
Our journey began in 1999, when we recognized the therapeutic potential of interactions between rescued animals and people. With support from the European Union Peace and Reconciliation’s Special Support Programme, we established the first of its kind in Northern Ireland: a program centered on the mutual benefits of animal-assisted therapy and learning. Since then, the AHP Programme has expanded to serve hundreds of individuals, ranging from children and young adults to adults and seniors, each discovering the unique healing that animals can bring.
What We Offer
The AHP Programme provides a variety of experiences, from equine-assisted learning and therapeutic interactions to group learning and animal care workshops. Participants engage with animals in a safe, supportive setting designed to build confidence, alleviate stress, and cultivate skills like empathy and communication. Our rescued horses, dogs, cats, and other sanctuary residents participate in ways that suit their unique personalities and comfort levels, ensuring a positive experience for everyone involved.
Each interaction is carefully structured to support individual needs and goals—whether someone is working to improve literacy skills, build confidence in social settings, or simply enjoy a calming, animal-assisted experience.
The Animals Helping People
The heart of our programme is our animals. Many of them have come from challenging backgrounds, and through rehabilitation, they have become invaluable partners in helping people. Animals like our gentle horses, friendly dogs, and sociable cats are carefully selected for each session based on their temperament and welfare. We prioritize the well-being of each animal, ensuring they are only involved in activities that align with their comfort and needs.
By interacting with animals who have their own stories of resilience and recovery, participants often find a unique sense of connection and inspiration. These animals provide a non-judgmental presence, offering companionship and comfort, which can be especially powerful for individuals facing personal challenges.
Core Values and Commitment
At Crosskennan Lane, we believe in compassion, respect, and inclusivity. Our AHP Programme reflects our commitment to creating safe, healing spaces where both people and animals thrive. We are passionate about making our services accessible to as many people as possible and are continually adapting to meet diverse needs, from wheelchair accessibility to sensory-friendly options.

Benefits of Animal Interaction
Engaging with animals in a supportive environment offers a wide range of scientifically supported benefits, particularly in areas of mental health, confidence-building, and social skill development. Here are some of the key benefits:
-
Mental Health & Stress Reduction
Interacting with animals has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety by lowering cortisol levels and increasing oxytocin, the "feel-good" hormone. This can lead to a calmer, more relaxed state, which supports overall mental well-being. -
Confidence Building
Animal-assisted activities provide a non-judgmental, supportive setting, allowing participants to take on new challenges without fear of criticism. This promotes confidence, especially for individuals who may feel anxious in social or academic settings. -
Enhanced Social Skills
Working with animals often encourages empathy, patience, and communication. These skills are valuable in building better relationships and improving social interactions, making it an ideal activity for both children and adults looking to develop these abilities. -
Literacy & Learning Support
Animal-assisted learning has been found to positively influence literacy skills, particularly in children. Reading to animals can improve reading motivation, reduce performance anxiety, and create a more enjoyable learning experience. -
Physical Activity & Mindfulness
Animal interactions encourage gentle movement, whether through grooming, walking, or playing. These activities promote mindfulness and encourage participants to be present, which is beneficial for mental clarity and focus.
Our Animals Helping People Programme combines these therapeutic benefits with educational and confidence-building activities, tailored to each participant's unique needs. Through this, we aim to make a meaningful difference in the lives of our visitors while supporting the welfare of our sanctuary animals.
Accessibility and Inclusion Information
Crosskennan Lane Animal Sanctuary is dedicated to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone. We strive to accommodate visitors of all abilities and needs to the best of our capabilities, ensuring that each participant has a safe, enjoyable experience. Below is an overview of our current accessibility provisions and guidelines for visiting our sanctuary.
Physical Accessibility
-
Wheelchair-Accessible Spaces: Our main cabin space is wheelchair accessible, and we have some accessible outdoor areas as well. However, due to the nature of our sanctuary, these spaces are limited. Please let us know in advance if you require wheelchair-accessible areas, and we will prepare accordingly.
-
Toilet Facilities: Currently, we do not have a wheelchair-accessible toilet on-site. We apologize for this limitation and are actively working on finding solutions to improve our facilities.
-
Parking and Access: For individuals with mobility challenges, parking is available directly beside our barn and cabin areas. This proximity reduces the distance to main activity areas, making it easier for those with mobility needs to access our facilities.
-
Navigating Uneven Surfaces: Some areas within the sanctuary may have uneven ground. Our team is available to provide assistance to those who may need extra help navigating these areas.
Sensory-Friendly Options
We understand that some visitors may have sensory sensitivities, and we are happy to make adjustments as needed. Please inform us in advance if anyone in your group would benefit from:
-
Quiet Spaces: We can offer designated quiet areas for those who may need a break from stimulating environments.
-
Sensory Accommodations: We are open to discussing individual sensory needs and can tailor certain activities or choose specific animals to interact with to create a comfortable experience.
Inclusive Experiences
Our sanctuary programs, including therapeutic interactions, animal-assisted learning, and reading activities, are designed to be inclusive and supportive. We welcome participants of all ages and backgrounds and encourage a non-judgmental, respectful environment where everyone can feel valued and supported.
Personalized Support
If you or someone in your group has specific accessibility needs, we encourage you to contact us in advance. By discussing your requirements ahead of time, we can ensure that we’re prepared to provide the best possible experience, whether it’s for mobility, sensory, or other individualized needs.
We are committed to continual improvement and appreciate any feedback on how we can further enhance accessibility and inclusion at Crosskennan Lane Animal Sanctuary.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or special requests—we’re here to help!
