As the summer comes to an end, we reflect on the wonderful time we had at Crosskennan Lane Animal Sanctuary during our Pony Pals Summer Scheme 2024. Over the six-week program, we welcomed many children eager to learn about horse care, interact with our rescue ponies, and participate in educational games and activities. It was heartwarming to see how engaged and enthusiastic everyone was, making this year’s summer scheme a true success.
Week 1: The Fun Begins – "What is a Horse?"
We kicked off the summer scheme with an introduction to horses, sparking curiosity and laughter. One of our volunteers cheekily described a horse as “the same as a cat, right?”—a comment that made the kids giggle but also opened the door to learning about the differences. After some crafting and educational games, the children took turns grooming the ponies, which was a highlight for everyone. We ended the day with an obstacle course where the kids demonstrated their newly learned handling skills. Special thanks to Cyril the donkey, who, true to form, helped us out by being our “donkey dodgem” in the obstacle course! The day ended with a lovely picnic, thanks to the sunshine!
Week 2: Exploring Horse Colors and Markings
Our second week of the Pony Pals Summer Scheme was filled with creativity as we learned about horse colors and markings. The children created beautiful pony mosaics and worked on their handling techniques with our horses Lydia, Susie, and Lacey. Lydia enjoyed the attention, while Susie ensured the kids stayed sharp and focused. Lacey gracefully participated in grooming but opted for some rest during the leading exercises. It was wonderful to see the children getting more confident and helping each other learn.
Week 3: Horse Care 101
The theme for week three was all about horse care, and it was a busy day at the sanctuary! Tilly joined us in the barn as we discussed the importance of cleaning stables and paddocks. The kids were shocked by how much hay it takes to feed just five horses for a day! We also delved into grooming and checking the horses for injuries, learning the importance of thorough care. We wrapped up with a fun educational poster-making activity, using old newsletters as part of our ongoing efforts to reduce, reuse, and recycle.
Week 4: Communication with Horses
In week four, the children learned all about how horses communicate. We made "communication ponies" with movable ears that could indicate different moods—alert, sleepy, scared, or angry. The children then practiced reading their ponies' cues in real-life situations, followed by a memory and communication challenge. The rain may have kept us inside for lunch, but that didn’t stop us! We shared our picnic indoors with the ponies keeping us company in the barn.
Week 5: Exercises and Teamwork
Our fifth session focused on exercises and movement, with teamwork being the central theme. The children worked together to navigate various challenges while learning about how horses move and stretch. This week was all about teamwork, problem-solving, and having fun while working with our ponies!
Week 6: Show Week – The Grand Finale
We ended the summer scheme in style with a full show week! The children got to experience preparing their ponies for show, followed by people and pony dressage, show jumping, and in-hand showing. The competition was fierce, but the smiles were bigger. Each child also crafted their own rosette to commemorate their achievements. As a special treat, Ella and Ruby’s Granny surprised everyone with a box of delicious buns, which made for a perfect ending to a wonderful summer.
A Special Pony Pals Summer Scheme Thank You !
We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who made this summer scheme possible—our dedicated volunteers, our wonderful rescue ponies, and of course, the children who took part. Each week was full of learning, laughter, and growth, not only for the children but also for our team and animals.
A big thank you also goes out to the parents and grandparents who supported this scheme by registering the children and helping us continue our mission to care for the horses and ponies at Crosskennan Lane Animal Sanctuary. It’s because of your generosity and involvement that we can continue to provide a safe haven for these animals and educate the next generation on responsible horse care.
